Betty- my current read. 
Betty is one of 8 children,  6 survived, born to a white woman and a Cherokee man. 
The family moves around until Betty is 6 - they return to Ohio to settle in an abandoned home. The owners had disappeared- leaving eight bullet holes in the walls - one for each family member. 
This is story about family history- a father passing down the stories of his ancestors; a mother suffering from severe depression.  Betty struggles to find her own place- bullied and tormented in school.  Lyrical. Poetic. Heart crushing. Sucked me right in.

It immediately made me think of the Pelican Brief by John Grisham.   An environmental thriller that sucks you in, includes massively rich men and politicians.   Jordan receives a random tip about a wealthy man evading tariffs.  As she digs deeper, Jordan learns no one knows why this man bought a failing solar panel company.  Maggie is a die hard conservationist, with connections all over the world. Migrating dowitchers are literally falling dead from the sky. An autopsy reveals a specific metal poisoning. Found in solar panels.  Great suspense, lots of characters to keep the plot moving.
